COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course will explore the potential for expression that can be achieved by working from the figure. We will observe the historical and contemporary trends of figurative sculpture, design and build armatures, study skeletal and muscular anatomy, proportion, expressive gesture and pose. Students will sculpt and critique body fragments, busts and figurines. Reproduction into other materials will be covered.
EVALUATION: 100 points: {CR=70+, NC=69-} {A=90-100pts, B=80+, C=70+, D=60+, F= 59-}
20 pts: Participation/Attendance: Students are expected to be prompt and use time wisely. Since virtually all work will be done in class with a model, students are expected to attend every class, or notify the instructor in advance of any absences. Attendance taken and announcements made approx. 15 min. after class begins. Keep Your Work area and the Classroom CLEAN!!!
20 pts: Life-Size Bust. Ability to build and render a portrait based on likeness, personality and mood.
20 pts: Mold and Casting of Bust. Rubber mold (negative) and casting (positive) of life-size head.
(5 pts ea: Application of rubber; sections of shell; presentation of head; overall execution.)
40 pts: 1/3 Life-Size Figure. Ability to capture the dynamic structure and express the emotion of a complete human figure at one-third life-size scale (approximately 24”).
Materials: Students must bring notebook with schedule and pencil to class every day. Most required materials will be provided through the course lab fee of $50. Other items must be provided by students as required per their specific demands.

SAFETY AND EQUIPMENT: Safety procedures will be demonstrated in class, and must be followed at all times. Students must cover legs and wear close-toed shoes when working with hot wax or making metal armatures. Students may want their own smock, etc.
