Lab fee: $50.  Non-repeatable.  Prerequisites: Art 5, or equiv.  Registration in Art 50-1L required. 

Syllabus:

COURSE DESCRIPTION: Introduces beginning level materials and processes in sculpture.

COURSE OBJECTIVES: Utilize the vocabulary of 3-dimensional design, elements of art, and principles of composition;  Follow safety procedures and protocols using hand tools and basic power tools appropriate;  Utilize carving and fabricating processes for sculptural works;  Make a presentation of a finished sculpture;  Develop a concise visual vocabulary with integrated aesthetic elements;  Identify historic and contemporary approaches to sculpture;  Critically asses one’s own work and that of others;  Visually compare and contrast elements of 3-dimensional design.

LEARNING OUTCOMES: Analyze visual concepts and technical maneuvers presented in sculpture. 2. Synthesize ideas to solve novel problems in sculpture, including proper use of tools and machinery.

GRADING: 100 Points Possible  {A=90+ pts, B=80+, C=70+, D=60+, F= 59-; CR=70+, NC=69-}

  1. 20 pts: Participation:  Attendance is critical as demonstrations are not easily repeated.Students must be prompt, use their time wisely, clean up after every class and notify the instructor in advance of any absences. 2 unexused absences will result in a drop.  Missing any class without prior notice will result in –5 points.  Students will also have work outside of class.
  2. 15 pts: Wood Project:  Design, cut and reassemble wood into a sculpture w/found object.
  3. 15 pts: Armature ProjectDesign, bend and weld a steel frame and cover with mesh and plaster.
  4. 20 pts: Steel Project: Design, cut and weld the provided steel material into a ‘Lantern’ form.
  5. 30 pts: Moldmaking and Bronze Casting Project: Design a project utilizing moldmaking and wax sheet fabrication to create a small bronze sculpture through the lost-wax casting method.

TEXTS: Required handouts provided.  Recommended texts: Henry Harvey (2010), A Universe of Metal Sculpture;  Malvina Hoffman (1939), Sculpture, Inside and Out.

SAFETY: Safety procedures will be demonstrated and must be followed at all times.

Students must come to class with covered legs, arms and close-toed shoes.

FEES: Materials fee:  $50 covers all necessary materials.  Students may wish to buy their own personal gloves, smock, respirator, etc., and may wish to purchase additional supplies.
